Despite recent seasonal rainfall, moisture deficits remain in central Kenya and Somalia

  1. Following rains during early March, significant long-term moisture deficits remain throughout central and eastern Madagascar.

  2. Inconsistent rainfall since late December has led to continued dryness across many parts of western Angola.

  3. Below-average rainfall since late February has resulted in moisture deficits in many parts of southern South Sudan,
Kenya, Ethiopia, Somalia, and northern Tanzania, which have already negatively impacted agricultural and pastoral activities.

  4. Torrential rainfall has triggered floods, damages to infrastructure, and fatalities over southeastern Kenya.
Additional rains may worsen ground conditions.

  5. Several consecutive weeks of below-average rainfall has led to early season dryness in parts of Ghana.

  6. Shabelle river levels have been rising since late April, creating a high risk for flooding along the middle and lower portions of the basin. Additional seasonal rainfall next week is expected to sustain the risk.
